Zak was born and raised in the North East of England and had what was reputed to be the most successful column in free press history in the early 90's with a weekly column in the Sunderland Star entitled Disappearing Wear which depicted local history through photographs and stories.
On moving south, he became an assistant to Magnum photographers Ian Berry, Peter Marlow, Burt Glinn, Stuart Franklin and Philip Jones-Griffiths and worked on assignments all over the world. At this time and with the help of the Princes Trust Zak moved fully into the freelance world where 11 years later he has developed a very successful career, having shot pictures for an enormous variety of organisations and people like Stern Magazine, The Guardian, the Independent, Agence VU (Paris), REA (Paris), Springer News (Berlin), Le Point, The Mail on Sunday, TES, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times Magazine, The Observer, Forum, ES Magazine, Boots, Heritage Lottery Fund, Cap Gemini UK, Candis Magazine, In The Know Magazine and many, many more.
